GMT is sometimes confused with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). For most purposes, the two times are the same. Technically, there is a difference. UTC is based on atomic clocks, which are very constant. GMT is based on the Earth's rotation, which is not constant. To keep GMT and UTC in synch, leap seconds are sometimes added to a year.
