CLUB TELESCOPE:

This fine telescope is available to any DFAC member for extended loan.

The history of this instrument is certainly unique. It was originally purchased in 1975 by Bill Abraham, class of '77, then at Brophy College Prep. After graduation, he donated it to Brophy where it came under the care of Jack Mitchell, S.J., physics instructor, Astronomy Club advisor, and later Principal, who used it for astrophotography. It was purchased in 1985 by Dan Heim, DFAC co-founder (then a member of the Phoenix Astronomical Society), when he taught physics at Brophy, and provided his first view of Jupiter's Great Red Spot from the summit of Crown King. Later sold to Steve Raymer, manager of Jerry's Audio-Video, it was eventually transferred to mutual friend Roger Serrato (our other DFAC co-founder). When Roger acquired his Meade CAT the scope was donated to PAS, which met at Brophy from 1986-1999. There it languished for some years in need of repairs. It was last acquired by DFAC member Jim Conley who expertly nursed it back to health, both mechanically and optically. It is now available to any member of DFAC for extended loan (2-3 months). To obtain this instrument for your own enjoyment, contact your DFAC president. A signed form indicating your acceptance of responsibility is required.
